What inspired me to become an Indie Writer? | #PoweredByIndie

This month of October is #PoweredbyIndie. Amazon is celebrating Indie Writers by allowing authors to share their paths to becoming an independent writer. Their question is ‘What inspired you to become an indie author?’

There are numerous reasons why I became an indie writer....

True, I have the freedom to design my own illustrations. Manage how I want the pages to reflect the story that I am telling. I find as an indie writer. I do not have to be stuck with pre-made packages that really do not suit my needs. I am at liberations to escape the traditional publishing shackles and be the inspirational designer & author.

However, the primary reason is that in 2010 I had just graduated from the Art Institute of California. I was a hopeful, like all college graduates, and to follow the career I had worked so hard to acquire through a college degree. Unfortunately, that degree suddenly became worthless when I was diagnose with Factor V Leiden when I became pregnant. Factor V Leiden is a mutation of one of the clotting factors in the blood called factor V. This mutation can increase your chance of developing abnormal blood clotting, and it became a chronic hindrance to a job. I was now and forever more a considered liability.

After my own horrendous diagnoses, I would soon learn that my son was Autistic. Autism is a complexity of brain development. A disorder characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. The reality that these two very large life-changing hardships came into my life I was emotionally lost, literally.

Questions that recycled in my mind is who would hire me? I have all these skill sets. Who could possibly take care of my poor son in my absence? Since he could not communicate, had high sensory moments harming himself and was consistently eloping. How can I even begin to fathom supporting my family when I’m overwhelmed by this emotional upheaval over all these sudden complications. The ‘HOW’ question became my torturing nemesis, and felt no rest on the matter.

Then one day I woke up with an epiphany that I have incredible skill sets. I can take everything I’ve learned from college and apply it on my own. As an indie writer, I could project the tools of my trade, such as indie writing, and be home for my son. I am a very passionate writer for all genres. I do not have a love for a singular genre -- I love them all. I currently write Fantasy, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Children, Poetry, Art, and so many more. Becoming an indie writer saved me. It gave me reason to live, gave me availability to dream the impossible dream, and helped me regain a sense of direction and integrity. I needed that to feel human again.

Lastly -- I wanted to leave part of my creative imagination to everyone I know (including my family) and the world before that final curtain closes. Here are some great insightful videos about my books and me:
